Mallory and I woke up at 3:05 and I was definitely a bit groggy and sleepy. I need to remember that for next time when a meetup dinner before and make sure I get enough sleep. It also didn't help that I was still jet lag.
We got ready quickly and were out of the hotel by 3:45 and over to the monorail. We didn't have long to wait for either monorail and got to Epcot by 4:15. We took the long walk over, took some pics, checked our bag and headed to the corrals.
The walk to the corrals is about 20-30 min so make sure to plan accordingly. We had plenty of time to spare so we used the Portos and then went to our corrals. I was excited to be in D as this was the highest corral placement I have had in WDW ever! Yay!
I somehow moved up to the front of the corral and was about 3 rows back-oops. I took off at what I thought was an easy pace and looked down and saw I was going a 9:25 pace. Uh oh. I slowed down and got out of the way but my shins were killing me. I basically had to slow down and walk a lot more in the first one mile to calm down my screaming shins. Even though I thought I was at a crawling pace, I still hit the first 5k in 11:31 pace so I recovered nicely.
The first few miles are pretty dark but they added in a group of volunteers cheering right after the first water stop which was greatly appreciated. One thing I love about this course is the first water stop is about at the first mile which is appreciated as its been awhile since we've had water.
After the mile 2 marker, they had a hot air balloon out but no pirate ship. This part was definitely really dark am I'm not sure why! It was hard to see until we got closer to the MK sign. The princes were out but I knew I could hit them on the way back.
We went through the magic kingdom sign and headed towards TTC. We hit another water stop and a new Porto system. Basically someone was stationed at the Portos and there was one line and all the Portos were numbered. The person stationed called out numbers and even though I didn't use it, Mallory said it work well and efficiently.
I hit the 5k mark at 35:51 (11:33 pace)
Running splits: 11:30/11:30/11:16
This was my first time running by where the speedway was and it was a bit strange. Also since it was early and the sun was starting to come up, it was super foggy-looked a bit creepy.
I finally stopped for a photo! Jasmine and Abu were out. While in line we saw the first place people fly by on the other side-so crazy!
Entering Main Street is insanely magical. Words can't really describe. This is the reason I keep coming back. One thing I appreciated this year was the chEAR squad was farther back on the street so we had room to run. I even got an amazing marathon foto pic that I love!
I had to stop to get a pic with the castle because the moment is just awesome
I hit the 10k marker in 1:49:05 (17:34 pace)
Running splits: 10:30/10:59/11:22
We had a water stop and headed back to the crowded part of the course. I stayed mostly on the grass and was able to keep a decent pace. We passed the halfway point with a DJ (no song selection this year) and arrived at Grand Floridian and our great photo stop with Mary, Bert, and penguins
We hit the Clif shot station and then had to wait almost half a mile until the next water stop. Before the water stop, I stopped to get biofreeze as my knee randomly was hurting-I think it was from the weaving.
15k: 2:17:02 (14:43 pace)
Running splits: 10:50/10:30/10:52
I knew the Princes/Heroes were coming up but it was still difficult with the weaving. I finally got to the Princes/Heroes and Mallory joined
We headed to Epcot and hit 1 water stop that was pretty narrowed. We did an out and back on the mile 1 area of the 10k and headed into the park. So close! We hit mile 12 heading into the bus area and backstage. I stopped for one more pic with a coach (which is supposedly the real coach they use in weddings!!!)
Finish line! Yay!
Running time: 2:23:58 (10:55 pace)
Finish time: 3:21:51 (15:24 pace)
Final mile splits: 10:18/10:57/10:42/10:43/1:56 (final .19)
One thing of note, this was a faster running pace than last year and I hadn't run a marathon a week before. So crazy I was able to keep up a decent pace having PRed a marathon 7 days before and ran the day before.
I got all my post race food and they handed out bags (thank goodness) and my 3 medals! Being a good cousin, while I waited for Mal I went and got 2 glasses of Moët! I met her by her tent and we drank while grabbing pics
Get to Poly so contemporary, poly and GF all had to take the same bus. Luckily this year they took the back way and we got to poly quickly and walked over.
We got espressos (so random but GFV has a Nespresso machine to use in the lobby), showered, got organized and walked over to breakfast at Kona. Breakfast was great but I had to peace out early to get to a dissertation meeting!
Yes, I had been up since 12AM LA time, ran a half marathon, had a small celebration and had to sit and have a dissertation peer review meeting 9 hours later. My group thought I was insane. I let my partner know what was going on and once we were done reviewing, I left. I relaxed a bit but couldn't sleep so we went to the pool before heading to M
Princess half really rocked for me this year. It rocked so much I'm debating doing it next year even though I said I wouldn't! We will see as I need to see how my dissertation goes.
Anyone else do the princess half marathon? How did it go for you? What's the last half marathon you ran?
