2016 Turkey Trot: Burbank recap

Start line!
I am back! Sorry I have had to take such a long hiatus. Basically I am in the full throws of dissertation writing which is great to be making such good strides but also means I am tired and hate being at a computer to blog. I am going to try and do 2-3 posts a week that are recaps for Paris and hopefully get to the race recaps over christmas break before more races come up!

But since I just ran a race over Thanksgiving and was able to type it up quickly, here you go! Also, I am linking up with Erika from MCM Mama Runs, Marcia from Marcia's Healthy Slice and Patty from No-Guilt Life.

I did the Burbank turkey trot on thanksgiving and it was fun! I got up at 515 and headed out at 550 and went straight to cvs for Black Friday shopping. I was in and out in 15 min with almost everything I wanted. I was on the road and arrived in Burbank in 15 min but lots of roads were closed. I stopped by a cop and he recommended a way to go and it worked!

I parked easy and walked over to the expo which was lots of local businesses set up. I walked right up and got my bib (yay for the Disney voluntEARS working!), used the Porto and headed back to my car to get ready and get a warm up in. I thought it would be easy but there wasn't much space and it was rather hilly (more to come on that) so after 10 min I called it quits and headed to the start.

It was a bit chaotic but the race director set us straight quickly and I moved towards the front as I was a "competitive runner". The course was through the neighborhood under the freeway then over the freeway. The course was a 5k so the 10k did two loops. At the start so people did not get the memo about moving back and almost got trampled. I kept to my intervals and felt strong and then the course got hilly. Climbing hills but not many downhills-boo. I was able to find a good rhythm and not get in the way of the kids sprinting.

The first loop was definitely more crowded than the second loop. They had 2 water stops at mile 1/4 and 2/5. I missed the first one as it was small but definitely hit all the others. The sun was bright and it warmed quickly and I definitely think some people overheated in their gloves and capris.

My splits were no where would I have liked but I felt good the whole time (minus like st the 10 miler). I know it'll take a few more months of adjustment with my IUD and I'm okay with that. You can definitely tell where the massive overpass was over the free way. On the second loop I caught up the walkers and the dog walkers. Ever try to go up a narrow overpass with dogs everywhere? Haha. Everyone was in high spirits and I was not in the mood to waste energy going around them.

SPLITS: 9:04/9:58/10:03/10:22/10:10/10:47/9:02
FINAL TIME: 1:02:11 (10:02 per mile)

I grabbed some snacks and got a pic and headed back to my car to change and head to universal studios. I'm glad I parked on the lower level as I got out immediately while the other exits had to wait!

I wanted breakfast and hot butterbeer and I got it! I headed home and showered and stretched and rolled and had some food and did some dissertation work before my nap. I finished thanksgiving food and headed off to eat! Eat all the food!

Overall I liked the race. It was well organized but basically just running through closed streets. Very few spectators and no mile markers. Luckily the course was measured just right :)
I will have to decide if I will do this again or go back to doing the La turkey trot. I paid 40 for this one but paid 55 to do both the 5k and 10k Downtown. That course is hilly but also has lots of downhills and flat parts at the end. I have a year to decide!

How did you celebrate thanksgiving??

Running a turkey trot is always a great way to kick off Thanksgiving. You certainly earned that delicious dinner plate!
