My take on the SELF/ tutu debacle #rockthetutu

Obliviously I love myself a tutu, as I have even written about how when I don't wear one, it makes me sad.

So when I saw this post go viral on Facebook about Self magazine and their bs meter about wearing tutus :

Excited to see our tutus in
SELF Magazine ... but shocked to see that running tutus are classified as lame. Especially considering the fact that this picture is from last year's LA Marathon when Glam Runner founders Tara and Monika ran together as superheroes ... because Monika was recently diagnosed with brain cancer and was running a marathon in the middle of a year of chemo.

I was pissed. Beyond pissed. I honestly felt like my way of running, having fun and dressing up and wearing tutus, was being attacked as not "real running", which should not be the case.

Then when I learned the whole story that Monika was recovering from a brain tumor, I was even more pissed! And even worse? They contacted her to use the picture and did it with such hatred really made my blood boil!

How could a magazine that's supposed to support and build up women (enough things on this planet bring us down including ourselves) could have a BS meter where they print things like this?

The fact they did not do their research:

  • umm.. Tara's bib says DIE TUMOR DIE
  • It is clearly a race (not just a run in central park)
  • it's the LA marathon
  • a marathon-who cares what you wear as long as it's comfortable for 26.2 miles!
  • they never asked for the background
  • the costumes are so cute and well done
  • the costumes are done by themselves and sold and donations made to charity
  • do people really believe that wearing a tutu makes you run faster?

  •  All of these add up to one thing: lack of research, lack of integrity, lack of support to the cause they claim they are for: women.

Well it did not take long for this to blow up on social media especially around the Disney groups (including rundisney weighing in and showing support for tutus) as so many people enjoy dressing up in costume for runs.

At the same time, the Self facebook page was pretty much attacked with people saying they were cancelling subscriptions and could not believe it. It was turning into a PR nightmare and surprisingly Self was pretty quiet.

It took Self longer to respond than I thought it should. Within 2 days the editor in chief had released the following statement:

"I am personally mortified,"
Lucy Danziger, the magazine's editor-in-chief, told USA Today. "I had no idea that Monika had been through cancer. It was an error. It was a stupid mistake. We shouldn't have run the item."

Yes it was great for them to speak out but the damage had been done. The fact that they apologized because she had cancer and not because it was not how people should treat each other was still sitting wrong with me. The fact that they said they would interview her for a future issue also did not sit well with me. They also said they would be donating to Girls on the Run, which is a good start.

Well they must have felt the same way as the interview is out NOW and done by the editor in chief herself.

Do I accept the apology and appreciate the interview the editor did with Monika? Of course! and Monika's composure and graciousness should not be understated as she is truly an inspiration.

Do I think its great that they will not be doing a bs meter? Yes!

Do I plan on subscribing to self anytime soon? NOPE! It seems like they have a negative slant and are trying to be edgy which I personally don't like. I read a few comments/references about how Self was trying to "appeal to millennials" with this level of snark and that does not go over well with me either as a millennial. I like things that are supportive and good for all.

Also I believe they are only apologizing so openly because it's a PR nightmare. They have not commented on the 5k diss ( where they said you should run 10k because there are "more bragging rights than the shorty 5k"). What about that diss to all of the people that run 5ks? Or do they not count because it is a "shorty 5k"? What else have they been writing in the magazine that has been looked over?

and I wonder as well if the person they had posted a picture had been anyone different (someone not so well-mannered, not recovering from cancer, not donating proceeds to charity), if they would have done anything. I guess we can just hope that they would!

However since this has been going on the better part of a week, let's put it to bed and #changetheconversation to be more positive.

As a runner, I feel that it is much harder than people give it credit for. There is a lot of training, planning and commitment that goes into being a runner no matter the distance whether it is a 50m dash to an ultra marathon of 100 miles. If it was easy, everyone would do it! All runners should be celebrated not torn down over something as trivial as an outfit. We are all in this together!

So going forward, run in the tutu, sparkle skirt, costume, WHATEVER YOU WANT as long as you are safe and comfortable and celebrate everyone's accomplishment!

We are all on different journeys but we are all runners: we gotta support each other! and I think rundisney put it best to show their support for #rockthetutu with this picture of the first tinkerbell winner:
Click 'Like' to show your support for everyone who has the courage to take the first step towards the Finish Line of their personal journey!

It is about the journey.  It is about the finish line, not the finish time! Let's all get out there and have a good run! As for me, I will still be out there rocking the tutu! I do it because it is fun, not because I think it will make me faster (even though I have run some great races in costume!) #rockthetutu

Marathon CARBLOADING

3/28/2014

I realized I never posted my marathon CARBLOADING. I feel like this is something I did right. I had issues during training so I turned it up like crazy for the real deal.

Carb loading is epic proportions for a marathon, like it should be.

As I have stated before, carb loading is something I have been working on this year by focusing on how to correctly carbload. In  the olden days, I would just eat a lot of pasta the night before, which caused me to feel a bit sluggish the next morning.

After consulting Mark's Daily Apple and Runner's World, I realized I need to carb load earlier than 2 days before because it can take 12-24 hours for the carbs to be "ready to use". All you need for carb loading is an extra serving or two of carbs at each meals for 4-5 days before the event. I also learned in the Tinkerbell Race Guide that carbs eaten need to be consumed about 12 hours before race start time. I also read an article that you need to aim for 600 carbs the day before the race! eek! so many! I do not think I can reach that high but I will try my best!

Carb loading can take any form: vegetables, root vegetables, potatoes, rice, quinoa, couscous, bread, pasta, tortillas, etc
.

Main points I focused on:

  • Drink a lot of tea and water all week to stay hydrated
  • Eat a clean diet all week-no fast food, no processed food.
  • Sleep! Getting at least 8 hours of sleep is a good way to make sure you are rested heading Into the point
  • Bananas! It turns my leg cramps were probably caused by a lack of potassium so I decided to test it out but consuming a lot of bananas.
  • For me, try and avoid as much gluten as possible. I'm still having issues with gluten so I need to continue to carb load naturally. Ever since I have done this, I feel that my running has gotten better!

WEDNESDAY

Added a banana, orange, and a cookie to regular food.

THURSDAY

I was at a women's conference so I had an amazing lunch (salad, chicken, quinoa, sautéed veggies) but also cookies and desserts and wine! Such a good day!

Pasta for dinner

FRIDAY

I had grad student interviews this day so I had 2 breakfast pastries and coffee for breakfast.

Lunch was wrap (great BBQ chicken wrap) and potato salad, cookie, apple and tea.

Added 2 bananas, and chips as a snack as well as everything at the expo.

For dinner, baked potato (with chili-amazing!) with homemade Gatorade.

SATURDAY

Had a bagel and latte for breakfast

Cheesesteaks and fries for lunch

Pasta for dinner

I also had 3 total bananas for the day (i definitely think that's a record for me)

I also had 3 glasses of homemade Gatorade and lots of water.

SUNDAY

Breakfast-a piece and a half of bread with peanut butter and 2 bananas.

Lunch and dinner-a lot of Indian food! So good

MONDAY

Disneyland! Gumbo and then fries and beignets and also a tostada salad

Overall, my loading was sufficient. I felt prepared but not too full. And including the insane amount of bananas I ate, I never experienced leg cramping. Potassium for the win!

Something I want to try is using oatmeal as a carb load before races. I'm going to test it out with long runs over the summer and see how it does. Even though I'm eating organic and all natural bread I would still like to move away from it (and traveling with oatmeal is easier!)

What are your favorite carb loading strategies before a race?

Fresh Farm to You box Review

So much in my crisper drawer!
I was so excited I forgot to take a picture of my box!

So fresh farm to you is a company that sends you fresh fruit and vegetables to your door. You schedule how often you would like them. I have them scheduled for once a month.

I picked the box that sends you fresh, local, organic and seasonal produce called Regular Valley.

Last week my first box arrived! Here are the contents:
  • 2 navel oranges
  • 1 purple cabbage
  • 1 haas avocado
  • 3 blood oranges
  • 1 fennel
  • 1 frisée (curly endive)
  • 1 lettuce
  • 7 golden beets
  • 6 carrots
  • 1 green kale
  • 7 radishes
  • 1 box of strawberries

It was all very fresh! I packed the lettuce immediately for my Lunch at work. I took all of the tops of the vegetables and made a green smoothie (and then made it taste a bit weird by adding vanilla protein powder-oops. )

I also took the cabbage, carrots, radishes and some frisée for a fresh slaw salad.

So far I really love the service!

Are you interested in trying this service?

Go to www.freshfarmtoyou.com and enter promo code 6164 for 10 dollars off! Make sure to share my name in the referral box-Juliana Calhoun- and then I will receive a discount too!

Have you ever used a food delivery service before?

****I bought and paid for the farm fresh to you box on my own. I was not paid for this post. All opinions are my own.****

2014 Great Race: Carb Loading

A 10k carb load is very different than a marathon carb loading (which I totally just realized I never posted! I will do that this week. Silly me). You don't need as much as it's a much shorter race.however it is still important to carb load to tap out your glycogen stores.

I've never really carbloaded before a 10k before so I thought I would see how it would work. And boy did it work-I PRed the race!

All week I made sure to eat semi-clean (my jack in the box meal not counting but it was an insane craving I had!) and make sure I had a good amount of protein and fruit as well as stretching and relaxing.

Personally, I have been focusing on how to correctly carbload as in the olden days, I would just eat a lot of pasta the night before, which caused me to feel a bit sluggish the next morning.

After consulting
Mark's Daily Apple and Runner's World, All you need for carb loading is an extra serving or two of carbs at each meals for 3-4 days before the event. I also learned in the Tinkerbell Race Guide that carbs eaten need to be consumed about 12 hours before race start time.

Carb loading can take any form: vegetables, root vegetables, potatoes, rice, quinoa, couscous, bread, pasta, tortillas, etc.

FRIDAY

Breakfast-Ralph and I went out for breakfast at Portos and it was great. We both got the breakfast special with an omelet with pepper jack cheese, potatoes and peppers, black beans and amazing pico. I also had a horchata coffee.

Lunch-I was pretty full from breakfast but wanted to eat before leaving. I had leftover gluten free pasta (so good!). On the drive over I had vanilla yogurt and a banana.

Snack-all the ones they gave us in the goody bag. A kind bar, amazing chips, dole mango pieces and dole strawberries. And some goldfish I brought. I also had 5 cups of tea! So good (don't worry-it was decaffinated).

Dinner- fried mozzarella sticks, bread and gluten free pasta in alla vodka sauce. And a nice glass of wine to get me sleepy :)

SATURDAY

pre race- piece of bread with peanut butter and a banana and English breakfast tea.

After party- so much! Burrito, chips, so many things of fresh juice, coffee, pasteries, lemonade, oranges, banana, etc

Lunch- leftover pasta, more oranges and fruit, a glass of wine, avocado yogurt dip and chips,

Dinner- frisée, fennel and crockpot chicken tikka masala

Sunday-Disneyland celebration! Ice cream sandwich, meatloaf with veggies, and mashed potatoes, and popcorn!

How do you carb load for a 10k?

Prepping for a Race: What to take with you in your Checked Bag

3/25/2014

I used to never want to check a bag as I did not want to deal with the lines. However as I have run more races, I have learned to put in a bag and what not to put!

Here is my list for what I just used at the Great Race:

  • Magicband (room key and credit card!)-for WDW races
  • ID-never know if you will be able to get a drink!
  • Credit card and Money-sometimes you need it!
  • Wipes-BEST IDEA! I pack face wipes and also baby wipes and towel off after racing. It really does make a difference until you can get to a shower
  • Chaffing gel- you gotta put it on before and after
  • Lip balm-may need
  • Roller-I did this for Princess half marathon, and it helped recovery. I bring my hand roller
  • Change of shoes- it's always good to get out of your sweaty socks and shoes
  • Deodorant/perfume- may need depending on how long the race is
  • I also pack these things in my bag the night before so I don't have to search for anything in the morning

Pack but take out/use:

  • Hat- you can decide to wear it or not
  • Sunglasses-same here
  • iPod- need your music!
  • Phone case-need to make sure it doesn't get ruined
  • Food- breakfast-usually banana, PB and bread
  • Drink-i always make tea in the morning. need the caffeine
  • Coat-it may be cold! you will want to cover up.

What do you pack for your races?

2014 Great Race After Party

3/24/2014

Picture
After the easy breezy Expo and my PR in the 10k, I was so ready to eat! This after party is rated as the best one in the country by Active.com (even though I think Wine and dine may be this-we will have to see!) so I couldn't wait to see if it lived up to the hype!

The after party was everything I had hoped for and it was all included in the cost of running!

As soon as I got my medal I also got water, a banana, pineapple juice, peaches and a smoothie (thanks arrowhead and dole!).

After that we also got to sample some delicious natural ice cream and juice.

We also hit up erewhon and got juice, chia drinks and bars. At this point out hands were full so we went to visit the UCLA tent and got a free bag to help out.

Our next stop was Round 1 of food:

  • Freeze dried corn
  • Granola
  • Salad from an awesome local cafe
  • Juice
  • Pastry

Round 2 of food:

  • Burrito and chips and salsa from sharks
  • Lavender lemonade, oatmeal and iced coffee from rabbit hole
  • Free coffee from Starbucks

Round 3 of food:

  • Another banana
  • Juice from whole foods (beet juice then apple juice)
  • Sample of a cookie
  • Water and sliced oranges from Albertsons
  • Lemonade from Alex's lemonade stand

We definitely ate a LOT and it was all so so good! Definitely got our money's worth

Afterwards we walked to the shuttle and chatted with the lady next to us who happened to a DL passholder so we told her to sign up for avengers half! We also met some rundisney peeps, one who just completed dopey and highly recommended it.

We went to the hot tub and met some runners who had done marathons all over the world so they were giving us great suggestions, especially for ones involving wine in France!

After that we showered, packed up and headed home in the traffic to LA!

I would definitely recommend this race to anyone! The 10k was gorgeous and the half is rated the best in the country!

Have you ever attended an epic food after party?

2014 Great Race: Arrowhead Old Agoura 10K

This is rated as one of the Top 10ks in the country so I knew I wanted to do it. A colleague at work had told me about it last year and I was definitely interested in it so when Mallory told me she was running it, I was all in! Here is Mallory's recap!

The night before we had a nice dinner at a cute Italian restaurant across the street from the hotel. It was so nice to walk to and from dinner and we even had a glass of wine! We headed back and were asleep by 10:00 for a 5:50 wake up call.

Got up and I was feeling good and positive. According to my fitbit, I slept 7 hours and 42 minutes! That's a new record for me. I was also very positive today was going to be my day, I would PR!

Got dressed, made a quick cup of tea and peanut butter sandwich and off to catch the shuttle. It was so nice to have a shuttle and so relaxing. We got off and walked over to bag check, bathroom break and up to the starting line.

It was the most interesting course start I have ever seen. As we walked up the hill (on a residential street nonetheless) we heard the national anthem and then someone screaming to move. the half marathon people were coming TOWARDS us. People were shocked by this as was I but it was nice to see them off. We had about a 25 minute wait until we started.

It was getting warm so I took off my long sleeve shirts and was debating if wearing pants were the best choice but not much more I could do now! I double tied it around my waist so it couldnt fall.

We had a good DJ.  I am still shocked that they let there be a DJ and announcer on a residential street before the race.

It was 7:30 and wave 1 took off and then 1 minute later, we did! I knew I wanted to try my hardest to PR (even though I knew there were lots of hills and the announcer even said this is not the race to PR) so I ran 2:10/30 seconds (thank goodness I tested this interval this week).

OFF WE WENT! downhill-woo-hoo! I tried my hardest to stay steady and not go out too fast like everyone around me was. I was ready to run my race and I knew to get those hills between mile 4 and 5, i would need to be slow.

I decided my motto for the race would be "conceal dont feel" as Elsa says. Conceal my speed for a bit, don't feel the need to go out to hard or fast.

Mile 1 was pretty flat, and we headed back into the mountains and parks for 2 and 3. it was insanely gorgeous but also really dangerous as there were cars everywhere. we had one small water stop with 5 volunteers that got crowded quickly but did the trick.

I was checking my mile splits at every mile marker and was hitting 11:20, 11:03 and then I DONT KNOW FOR THE THIRD MILE BECAUSE MY IPOD RESET. i was calm and just reset it for a 5k knowing i had done 34 minutes. yeah, i need  a garmin (and to take my ipod to the genius bar!).

At the 5k, i took out my citrus shot and started taking a bit of it. we hit another water stop and i knew i would be good to go minus the fact my big toe on my left foot with numb and then my calf. i knew i needed to will it away and it worked (listening to let it go also helps!)

After that we got to mile 4 and i knew it was do or die. the mile with the hills and magically let it go came on! i listened to it twice in a row and i knew it was what i needed for the hills.

And were the hills ever tough! i decided i would go up as much as I could, and then walk briskly and then run the downhills regardless of interval. and it worked-i was flying past people (including the people with strollers! that was insanity to watch). at one point A CAR WAS LEAVING. i knew i had to pass it as we were about to hit mile 5 and the water station and i did not want ot get stuck behind it.

the car eventually left and it was pretty downhill from there. i was pretty tired from hills so I walked a bit more to recover here. i knew my time was good and I was going to PR! i heard the 1K warning and knew the PR was mine. i had to remember to take good walk breaks to not burn out and to hold back the tears.

I waved at all the people outside their houses (the kids were so cute!) and headed back towards agoura hills high school where the finish line was. we hit gravel and I knew i needed ot be careful but then it would all be downhill from there. I could feel it on the downhill, i felt GREAT and could give it a bit more so I was going. i decided to insert a final 10 second walk break because you never know. We turned and saw the finish line (in the grass-kinda weird) and that was it. I GUNNED IT (I know you arent supposed to do this but I have never had the opportunity and felt great) and was behind happy to cross.

i saw the finish line clock said 1:08! I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! I didnt know what time i crossed but soon found out I PRed with 1:07:09 and I could not be prouder. my goal was 1:09 the whole time and i was so happy! I worked so hard on this and was so excited to be able to celebrate. Considering the killer hills-it was a huge accomplishment! I waited for Mallory and we headed to the After Party and it was EPIC!

When I got home, I did laundry, prepped dinner and caught up on magazines. and of course I watched Frozen as Elsa was my girl of the day!

I still can't believed I PRed and as big as I did with hills! I am very tempted to try and run another 10k,a flat one, within the next month to see what I am capable of. I think it would be super fun as well :)

Tomorrow I will post about the after party as it was EPIC!

How do you celebrate after a PR?
