2016 Turkey Trot: Burbank recap

Start line!
I am back! Sorry I have had to take such a long hiatus. Basically I am in the full throws of dissertation writing which is great to be making such good strides but also means I am tired and hate being at a computer to blog. I am going to try and do 2-3 posts a week that are recaps for Paris and hopefully get to the race recaps over christmas break before more races come up!

But since I just ran a race over Thanksgiving and was able to type it up quickly, here you go! Also, I am linking up with Erika from MCM Mama Runs, Marcia from Marcia's Healthy Slice and Patty from No-Guilt Life.

I did the Burbank turkey trot on thanksgiving and it was fun! I got up at 515 and headed out at 550 and went straight to cvs for Black Friday shopping. I was in and out in 15 min with almost everything I wanted. I was on the road and arrived in Burbank in 15 min but lots of roads were closed. I stopped by a cop and he recommended a way to go and it worked!

I parked easy and walked over to the expo which was lots of local businesses set up. I walked right up and got my bib (yay for the Disney voluntEARS working!), used the Porto and headed back to my car to get ready and get a warm up in. I thought it would be easy but there wasn't much space and it was rather hilly (more to come on that) so after 10 min I called it quits and headed to the start.

It was a bit chaotic but the race director set us straight quickly and I moved towards the front as I was a "competitive runner". The course was through the neighborhood under the freeway then over the freeway. The course was a 5k so the 10k did two loops. At the start so people did not get the memo about moving back and almost got trampled. I kept to my intervals and felt strong and then the course got hilly. Climbing hills but not many downhills-boo. I was able to find a good rhythm and not get in the way of the kids sprinting.

The first loop was definitely more crowded than the second loop. They had 2 water stops at mile 1/4 and 2/5. I missed the first one as it was small but definitely hit all the others. The sun was bright and it warmed quickly and I definitely think some people overheated in their gloves and capris.

My splits were no where would I have liked but I felt good the whole time (minus like st the 10 miler). I know it'll take a few more months of adjustment with my IUD and I'm okay with that. You can definitely tell where the massive overpass was over the free way. On the second loop I caught up the walkers and the dog walkers. Ever try to go up a narrow overpass with dogs everywhere? Haha. Everyone was in high spirits and I was not in the mood to waste energy going around them.

SPLITS: 9:04/9:58/10:03/10:22/10:10/10:47/9:02
FINAL TIME: 1:02:11 (10:02 per mile)

I grabbed some snacks and got a pic and headed back to my car to change and head to universal studios. I'm glad I parked on the lower level as I got out immediately while the other exits had to wait!

all dressed in the car
I wanted breakfast and hot butterbeer and I got it! I headed home and showered and stretched and rolled and had some food and did some dissertation work before my nap. I finished thanksgiving food and headed off to eat! Eat all the food!

Overall I liked the race. It was well organized but basically just running through closed streets. Very few spectators and no mile markers. Luckily the course was measured just right :)
I will have to decide if I will do this again or go back to doing the La turkey trot. I paid 40 for this one but paid 55 to do both the 5k and 10k Downtown. That course is hilly but also has lots of downhills and flat parts at the end. I have a year to decide!

How did you celebrate thanksgiving??

Getting to Universal Studios Hollywood by Public Transit

11/4/2016

I am in Orlando for a short Universal trip and then onto Walt Disney World for Food and Wine festival, the start of Christmas, and running the Wine and Dine 5k (corral A!), wine and dine 10k (potential corral A) and Wine and Dine Half (corral D!). Follow along on Social Media with my Adventure: Facebook , Twitter, Instagram, Periscope (Juliana@4 Well Rules)

Over the summer, I decided to venture to Universal Studios Hollywood during rush hour morning traffic. I decided to try out the train! From my house, I can take the train downtown and then over to Universal. It was easy to do but did take awhile:  an hour from the time I left it apartment until I was off the train at universal. The drive is usually 20 minutes from my house to get to Universal.

Now this is where things get tricky once you get off the train! You get off the train and up and over the new walkway (you don't have to wait for the light anymore!). From there, you have to get to the shuttle to take you up the hill. Once I finally got on the shuttle (it seems to run every 10 minutes), it was about five minutes to the top and it drops you off pretty close to the front gate (next to the AMEX offer if you're familiar with Citywalk).

I got through security and was able to update my pass which now includes free parking and got in the park in under 10 minutes.

Overall, it's great to know you can get there using public transportation. Taking the shuttle up the hill could be a slow process as the trams aren't very large-they hold maybe a few hundred people. However, I'm not sure how many times inwould do it. I live a 20 minute drive with traffic (I drove the next week to compare) and now that I have free parking it makes sense to drive. Even though I had to park far away, it was still about 45 minutes from the time I left my apartment until I was in the park.

Here are the breakdown of times:
Left apartment at 7:35
Downtown around 8:05
Left at 8:15 towards Universal
Got to universal at 8:45
Waited for shuttle 8:55
Security 9:05
In park 9:10!

Have you ever taken public transportation to a theme park?

In honor of getting my plastic pass at Universal on Wednesday, I decided to give recaps on my past Universal trips. I love some time at Universal Studios Orlando!

This trip occurred right before Dopey. We had a ton of time there and got in so much great ride time. We stayed on site at Royal Pacific and got free Front of the Line which was clutch! The parks were much busier than we were predicting.

 Universal day 1
  • Lunch at comic strip cafe
  • Great meal and a good price
  • Jurassic park, Dudley, Popeye-soaked doesn't even begin to describe us. We looked like post wine and dine and had to get in the human dryers
  • Dueling dragons-I wish they still raced but it's still a great coaster as long as you keep your head back
  • Snack at kabobs-this line was a mess but the hummus was awesome
  • Super heroes-stalking superheroes was great as none of them had a line
  • Spider-Man-since this ride came out in 1999, it has been one of my favorite theme park attractions and still is! Just great!
  • Hulk-hands down my favorite roller coaster on the planet. IT IS SO SMOOTH
  • Storm force-this ride is a hot mess-teacups with a kinda strange storyline
  • Cat In the hat-another hot mess ride but I love it
  • One fish-it's dumbo with water. We followed directions and still got wet!
  • Trolley
  • Butter beer-we met HP crazies that told us we had to try the hot butter beer and they did not lie. OMG.
  • Dinner at 3 broomsticks-not the best. It was expensive and nothing was seasoned well and took forever even though no one was in line. I wouldn't recommend
Universal day 2
  • Diagon alley-don't worry all Harry Potter will have its own post but WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE. I cried as soon as I walked in. It's worth all the money to go see it. GO NOW!
  • Gringotts-awesome! So beautiful inside
  • BUTTERBEER ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST
  • breakfast at 3 broomsticks-a great sized breakfast and it comes with a drink!
  • Hogs warts express-umm the platform 3/4 is INSANE. the effect is so cool and the train is great.
  • Forbidden journey-great as always but it made me really motion sickness (maybe because we were hungry)
  • Hippo griff-such a cute little kid ride
  • Hogwarts express-it was awesome but I prefer it going to hogsmeade than coming back.
  • Simpsons-so great but the ride is really loud.
  • Kong-like dumbo but the dialogue and story is hilarious. We couldn't stop laughing.
  • Springfield and coffee and donuts-AMAZING. I had a donut and coffee from lard donuts
  • MIB-one of my favorites but I sucked this time
  • ET-THE SMELL! I was so in love (we had just watched ET when I was home with my mom)
  • Moes-duff beer and flamin more? YES PLEASE
  • T2-my favorite show. I'm sad they got rid of it in LA.
  • Taco lunch-such a surprise. 2 tacos for 8 bucks with chips? I'm sold!
  • Transformers-I wasn't expecting much but it was a lot like an updated Spider-Man. I didn't understand the storyline at first but really liked it
  • Rip rockit-this is one of the most intense rides I've ever been on. The video they take is full of NSFW words from both of us
  • Twister-my family is obsessed with this and it didn't disappoint. But I heard they may be getting rid of it :(
  • Mummy-one of our longest waits with FOTL but we enjoyed ourselves.
  • IOA for Spider-Man and hulk-because were obsessed
  • Dinner-leaky cauldron-yes we went back so we could try and get more ice cream haha
  • Despicable me-the longest regular wait all day and we were both obsessed. Such an adorable ride
  • Hulk-had to ride at night (which was epic by the way)
  • Dueling dragons-had to do it at night too
  • Butter beer-we couldn't leave with out!!
Universal day 3
  • Up at 630
  • Packed and a banana
  • Diagon alley and gringotts-did single rider and walked right on!
  • Breakfast at leaky cauldron-the lady remembered us from the day before
  • Shopped
  • Ice cream-HAD TO TRY THEM ALL! the clotted cream was my favorite.
  • Transformers-final ride. We both understood it so much better this time.
  • Hotel to airport to Magical Express to hotel

Hi all! Linkup Friday!! As the Friday Five was disbanded last week, Running on Happy and Fairytales and Fitness have picked up with the Friday Five 2.0!

I am having a great time down in Orlando and I hope you are following along with me! I visited the Food and Wine festival on Thursday and definitely got my moneys worth! Here are the top 5 things I have eaten so far (I will be back on Sunday and Monday too!)
  1. Lamb chop in Australia- lamb chop with a mint pesto and potato crunchier
  2. Mojo pork in Islands of the Caribbean -pulled pork with black beans, white rice and pickled onions
  3. Cheddar cheese soup in Canada-the best soup on the planet
  4. Duck confit at the Chew Collective-duck confit with creamy polenta and fire roasted salsa
  5. Liquid nitrogen chocolate-almond truffle- amazing dessert that was gluten free and included a whiskey caramel sauce

Have you ever been to the Epcot Food and Wine festival?

This was the easiest costume ever as I just ordered it. I ordered a child's size costume so it still fit but it did not sweep the ground. The costume included the mask.  I added in red ProCompression socks to match it.

How to Make a Coronation Anna Costume

Missed the recaps for the 2015 Princess Half marathon weekend? Here they are: Princess Frozen 5k, Glass Slipper Challenge (10k +Half).

This costume came together pretty easily!
Needed:
black shirt (I also added a black long sleeve as it was cold!)
For the shirt, I added blue fabric to the sleeves, gold ribbon to the top and bottom and painted on the design
For the skirt, I used green fabric with flower ribbon. If you want to get technical, you can paint each of the panels on the skirt.

Overall, I loved that I was able to dress in theme but also not be just the typical Anna and Elsa.
