Many websites do grocery store match-ups, which is a great way to save money (Chief Family Officer and Southern Cali Saver are my two favorites) , but I tweak it just a bit. I only highlight the good deals that are healthy, all-natural. Nothing in a box or can (unless it's exceptional!). By buying what is in season and on sale to build your meals, you can save a lot of money each week! As always, YMMV (Your Milage May Vary) as these are all set to Southern California grocery stores ads.

As you know, I try and follow a Primal way of eating with of course some modifications along the way.

Mark Sisson of Mark's Daily Apple has written many books. One of them is Primal Connection. It discusses how to adapt caveman concepts to modern living.

For today, the book is 99 cents! Which is a great deal. I just bought it and if you are interested, here you go!

My typical Breakfast

6/26/2014

Picture
Gotta love eating at work! Bulletproof coffee (1 TB of butter and 1 TB of coconut oil), strawberries, yogurt with cinnamon, chia seeds and flax seeds, and green smoothie (made with spinach, bananas, strawberries, blueberries and chia seeds).
I get asked often what I eat for breakfast. I usually have a "large" breakfast but I split it up between home and work.

Before I head to work, I always have a glass or 2 of water along with eggs. I usually average 1-2 eggs/day along with either bacon or sausage. I leave my house at 8:05 every morning to get to work.

If I have a regular run (2-3 miles before work), then I just have half a glass of water before heading out the door. Longer runs on weekends, I have fruit and peanut butter and oatmeal.

Then when I get to work around 9:05, I get settled for the day and grab my food.

In my office between 9:00-12:00 (depends on how hungry I am), I have:
fruit of some kind (usually berries or a banana, at least in the summer)
  • Plain Greek Yogurt (unless I'm carbloading then I will get some with added sugars). I add in flax seeds, cinnamon and chia seeds to help with protein as well as flavor.
  • Green smoothie-I used to have this at home but it took up too much time. Now I have a small amount at work (this one has spinach, blueberries, banana, milk, chia seeds and strawberries)
  • Tea or coffee-I usually drink tea all day at work. Usually once a week I will have coffee (like today). I alternate between about 5 different types of tea depending on my mood.
I also don't like strong tea- I usually can get 3-5 cups of tea out of 1 teabag.

Sometimes I will switch it up and have a bit of leftovers for breakfast or even make tea or coffee (real bulletproof with coconut oil, butter, vanilla made in a french press and blender).

And then I have lunch between 12:30-1:30 and dinner between 6:00-8:00 (depending on if it's at work or at home).

What do you usually eat for breakfast?

QEM: Veggie chili

3/4/2014

I made this when it was a chilly and rainy day and it is so easy especially with the crock pot.

Prep time: 15 minutes

Cook time: at least 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low or somewhere in between. The longer the more flavorful.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans of tomato sauce
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1 can of tomato paste
  • 1 can of kidney beans
  • 1 can of chili beans
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 bunch of celery
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 can of corn

Salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, cayenne pepper, red chili flakes, cumin, oregano to taste

1. Chop veggies and throw into the crock pot

2. Open cans and drain excess liquid. Add to crock pot.

3. Add seasonings to taste

4. Stir everything together

5. Let cook

This time as you may notice below, I used a crock pot liner. If you decide to go this route, make sure to spray it with olive oil so the food won't stick and rip the bag.

If you don't want to use a bag, heavily spray the whole crock pot with olive oil and add everything and stir. You don't want it to get stuck on the sides.

Very easy recipe! Feel free to modify by adding meat and/ or taking and adding ingredients.
